The American Association of Orthodontist recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at age 7. This is particularly the case for patients with cross bites, severe crowding, thumb suckers, open bites and jaw discrepancies. In some cases early treatment prevents jaw surgery, extractions of permanent teeth, help speech and swallowing patterns and can allow teeth to erupt in a normal position. Patients with growth problems and certain jaw conditions are best treated at this stage, which is considered Stage 1. During Stage I, modifying growth is the main goal.
